Joyce Chan Hiu Tung (b. 1990, Hong Kong) is an artist, art educator, and writer currently based in the United Kingdom. Chan holds a BFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans drawing, painting, installation, calligraphy, and performance. Her art explores themes of identity, the state of mind, and reflects her views on social and political issues.
Chan’s passion for art began at the age of 7, when she saw it as a divine gift and a lifelong mission. She believes that art is a powerful vehicle for raising awareness about contemporary global issues. Drawing on the adage “You are what you eat,” Chan extends this idea to advocate for mental health, questioning whether we give as much attention to our spiritual well-being as we do to our physical needs.
With over 13 years of experience as an educator, Chan believes that education is the key to addressing today’s challenges. She encourages her students to explore the art world by experimenting with various mediums to express their ideas. Her approach is rooted in systematic methodologies designed to ensure her students’ success and creative development.
In recent years, Chan has increasingly turned to performance art as a means to address her concerns about social and political issues. Her performances create spaces for reflection on both personal and collective experiences in the face of contemporary challenges.
In addition to her artistic practice, Chan writes articles and art criticism to externalize her perspectives and engage with a broader audience.
In October 2024, Chan relocated to the United Kingdom, where her latest series, Skywalker, explores themes of belonging and self-discovery in the context of life in a foreign country.
